Description

NGC 7662, aka the "Blue Snowball," is a relatively small planetary nebula located in Andromeda, with the central brighter region being about 37 arc-seconds across.  It is estimated to be at a distance of 5500 light years.

This moderately deep integration combines 300s, 60s and 30s exposures to bring out the faint outer spherical shell as well as the bright inner ellipse.  Strong OIII emissions put the "Blue" in this snowball.

As explained in Kanipe & Webb's Annals of the Deep Sky V. 1, one of the fascinating characteristics of this planetary are the FLIERS - "fast low-emission ionization regions" - visible as the comet-like structures at the edge of the outer sphere.  Notice that they appear to be headed back toward the central star!  Astronomers are still puzzling over this - are they actually "falling" back in that direction, or are they fixed in place with ionized gases flowing around them?

Also visible in this image are a couple of faint bluish streaks at 10 o'clock and 11:30 - are they also FLIERS that have flown extra high?

Data was captured with Voyager Advanced over 22 nights from late July to early November 2023.  Calibration was done with SiriL and Gess, and image processing completed in PixInsight with a final color boost in 3DLUTCreator Pro.
